Southeast Asia
Working Group
a new multidisciplinary collective
Housed in the Department of Anthropology
at the University of Pennsylvania
The Southeast Asia Working Group is a new collective of multidisciplinary scholars established in 2020 at the University of Pennsylvania. Through transdisciplinary and international conversations, public events, collaborative research, an online platform, and engaged/activist projects, we aim to increase representation of scholarship on Southeast Asia, especially highlighting the work of Southeast Asian Scholars. We interrogate conventional understandings of the Southeast Asian region to better understand how “regions” are themselves imagined, and to question what the limits of “Southeast Asia” and Southeast Asia Area Studies may be.
